CAPE TOWN - Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said that the high number of pedestrians being killed in road accidents was very concerning.

Creecy met traffic officials at a roadblock on the N1 in Touwsrivier on Thursday, to provide a mid-festive season update on road safety.

Statistics show more than 250 pedestrians have died in road accidents since the first of December.

"I think that is very concerning is the very high number of pedestrian fatalities and many of those fatalities are in the metro areas and involve pedestrians crossing major roads between settlements at night."

Creecy said that starting this week, traffic officers would be deployed at secondary roads across the country.

"We think members of the public are using mobile apps and they are trying to move away from law enforcement operations. So bad news, if you're doing that, we're going to find you on the secondary roads."

The minister said national traffic police would be tightening up partnerships with metro officers for the rest of the festive season.
