CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile has waged a war against the illegal selling of alcohol across the province.
This was after 20,000 litres of alcohol confiscated from illegal establishments were destroyed on Tuesday.
Senior police management in Western Cape said they currently have 158,000 litres of alcohol stored at a warehouse ready to be destroyed.
Some of the alcohol stored at this facility was confiscated as far back as 2018.
Patekile said the delay in disposing of the alcohol was caused by pending court cases.
"We are ensuring with the courts that these cases are resolved quicker because these are not serious cases and should be finalised as soon as possible. Remember also, the more the liquor stays there, it becomes not fit for human consumption anymore. So, whether now after such a long time that person wins the case in court, it can't be returned because it's not fit for human consumption."
