CAPE TOWN - Women lobby group, Community Woman Action, says it's depressing to find out that a police officer abused his power to allegedly rape a woman.
A 41-year-old policeman is accused of sexually assaulting a 26-year-old woman who was a detainee at the Mfuleni Police Station in November, where the officer worked as a cell guard.
The victim, who was detained on kidnapping and attempted murder allegations, claims that the accused raped her in an empty cell, and then took her back to her cell where she was locked up with seven other women.
The defense claims the act was consensual, but the State has painted the accused as a man with a long history of abuse.
The State claims that the accused tried to rape a female detainee at the police station in March 2021.
The 41-year-old constable appeared at the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on Tuesday to apply for bail.
Community Woman Action's Violet Mnyimba said that she was disheartened by allegations of abuse made by the State, committed by the accused against women.
"When I was sitting there, I thought there might be something wrong with him, because you can't be doing such things to women. Something is very wrong with him. I think they need to take him and check if there's nothing wrong with him mentally."
A decision on whether bail will be granted will be made on Thursday.
