JOHANNESBURG - Access to water has been restored to three health facilities in Gauteng, which were previously affected by a weekend-long outage.

The Helen Joseph, Leratong and Bheki Mlangeni hospitals were all affected by Rand Water's maintenance work on its Zwartkoppies and Eikenhof pump stations.

Woken up by labour pains, a maternity ward patient was rushed to Bheki Mlangeni Hospital in Jabulani, Soweto only to find the facility without water.

The mother-to-be said she was told she was meant to come with her own water because of the shutdown.

Many areas are still without water, while Joburg Water said its systems were still recovering from the maintenance work.

Department of Health spokesperson, Motalatala Modiba, said that the water supply had now been restored.

"Helen Joseph in Johannesburg and also Leratong in the West Rand. Over the weekend, the situation normalised and as of today, they are back to normal, although, I think with Helen Joseph, in the morning, the supply was still coming in but not at the level they are used to. The water has been restored. Bheki Mlangeni also had a challenge. We started seeing the water coming back."
