WC Social Development Dept worried about high number of kids in its foster care system
Records show the number has increased from 36,000 to 42,000 since March 2021.
CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape’s Social Development Department has raised concern about the high number of children in the foster care system.
Records show the number has increased from 36,000 to 42,000 since March 2021.
Social Development MEC Jaco Londt says the department cannot handle the situation alone.
"We need communities to work with us to safeguard children, starting with parents and guardians. Social workers are overburdened and when it comes to the festive season this workload increases when parents and guardians neglect their duties."
Londt says on busy beach days children often get lost and have to be put in places of safety.
"I want to appeal to parents and guardians to please keep an eye on your children, especially around a body of water. Avoid drinking at the beach or a public swimming pool because – not only is it illegal – it could place your child in danger as it impairs your judgment."
Londt says child safety is not the government’s responsibility - it should start with parents, guardians and caregivers.
