CAPE TOWN - The search for a 20-year-old man who disappeared under the water at Myoli Beach in Sedgefield, Western Cape, continues.

The National Sea and Rescue Institute (NSRI) said the missing man was from Eastern Cape.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon confirmed that the drowning occurred after he was caught by a rip current in a surf zone on Saturday.

"Despite an extensive search, there remain no signs of the missing man. Police water policing and diving services were activated, and police divers, assisted by local police, NSRI Wilderness, and NSRI lifeguards, are continuing in an ongoing search. Thoughts, care, and compassion are with the family and friends of the missing man in this difficult time."

Lambinon has urged beachgoers to adhere to safety warnings and listen to safety officials deployed at beaches.

"While sea currents and rip currents are unpredictable at all times, the concerns are that with the second high tide of the day peaking during the mid-afternoon, between 3:15 pm and 4:30 pm, the outgoing tide may cause sea and rip currents to be stronger than normal. Only swim at beaches protected by lifeguards during lifeguard duty times."
