CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said it was a shocking revelation that an explosive device was thrown over the wall of the local Jewish Community Centre.

Investigators have confirmed that the device in December's incident was an explosive.

Officials at the centre said that the improvised device was thrown into the property in Hatfield Street but it failed to detonate.

Hill-Lewis has since condemned the incident.

"It's a shocking revelation that this is a real attempted attack, explosive attack on this Jewish Community Centre. We obviously condemn it in the strongest possible terms."

The mayor said that Cape Town had a long history of being a peaceful city where its residents could coexist.

"We live in a loud and sometimes raucous democracy, where you can express your views very strongly, but you cannot express them in a way which is violent or is intended to sow terror. That is totally unacceptable."

The mayor said that investigators had identified the vehicle used in the incident and were close to tracking the suspects down.
