JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng's law enforcement agencies are ramping up traffic patrols on key roads in an effort to curb road fatalities over the festive season.

During the last festive period, the Road Traffic Management Corporation recorded over 1,400 deaths on South African roads.

On Sunday, acting Premier Lebogang Maile said despite efforts by the provincial government, Gauteng continues to have the highest number of road fatalities in the country.

"Road safety remains a significant concern. Gauteng continues to account for a large share of national road fatalities during the festive season."
