The Metsimahole by-elections in 2017 remain the SACP’s only experience of contesting elections alone.
Leaders of the party have been contemplating whether it will go the ActionSA route by targeting a few key municipalities or do an expensive wall-to-wall election campaign.
The party has decided to go with the latter.

"This step is essential for advancing working-class representation, ensuring the voices and struggles of the working class and poor drive local governance.”
SACP delegates at the congress said it was long overdue for the party to emerge from the shadows of the ANC.
