JOHANNESBURG - RISE Mzansi has expressed its support for the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s legal challenge against government for its failure to provide South Africans with equitable access to land as per the Constitution.

The party said the redistribution of land to all South Africans who need it is central to the country’s nation-building efforts.

The foundation last week filed papers in the Western Cape High Court challenging government over its inaction.

It seeks an order from the superior court directing government to ensure that legislation is enacted within 18 months to address this.

RISE Mzansi spokesperson Gugu Ndima said the party is aligned with the position taken by the foundation.

“The current unemployment rate, the perennial social issues of housing, tensions in the township economy, and access to basic amenities boil down to the lack of political will.

“Government has failed to utilise innovative policies in land reform to achieve spatial justice. We need to start being innovative to achieve lasting outcomes. Land remains a key mechanism to change the lives of millions of South Africans precariously dependent on welfare.”
