CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town and the South African Police Service (SAPS) have launched a joint festive season safety plan by bolstering law enforcement with an extra 870 officers.
The joint operation is the first major public safety initiative since the signing of the cooperation agreement between the SAPS, City and Western Cape government in August.

Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the new cadets would be deployed across the city.
"[They will be deployed] at our most popular beaches, mountain and hiking routes, tourist hotspots, CBDs, road blocks, our community swimming pools and in our crime hotspots."
Deputy provincial commissioner for policing, Major General Mpumelelo Manci said the new cadets would strengthen the partnership with SAPS, which bolstered its ranks with more than 2,600 new officers this week.
"That means an increase in capacity in terms of the force multipliers. They will be deployed at the beaches, in the malls. They enhance visibility. It's an increase in capability."
