25 tankers deployed around Johannesburg amid 86-hour planned water shortage

JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Water officials started filling up about 25 tankers which will be deployed to various places across the city as an 86-hour planned water shortage kicks off.
The trucks are expected to leave from Riverlea in the south of the city and head to places including Randburg, Soweto and Roodepoort which are some of most affected neighbourhoods.

The water utility will cut supply this weekend to conduct maintenance work in Zwartkoppies and Eikenhof pump stations.
Rand Water officials in Riverlea connected a pipe from a water hydrant directly to a tanker to fill up the truck which is one of the 25 vehicles that will be used to supply residents.
Households, businesses, hospitals have been urged to make provision for this weekend’s water shortages.
Rand Water said that it chose this timing strategically, because many residents head out of town for the holidays and industries close, giving its systems time to recover.
Johannesburg is grappling with aging and poorly maintained infrastructure.
