CAPE TOWN - A section of the N1 highway leading into Cape Town CBD is fast becoming a smash-and-grab hotspot.

Footage of a motorist being robbed has emerged after being captured on the dashcam of another motorist in early morning traffic earlier this week.

The Mayco Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says the robbery on the N1 just after the lower Church Street bridge is not an isolated incident.

"That and pushing obstacles into the road started about two years ago because of the informal settlement that was established there."

Smith says law enforcement officers are doing patrols in other hotspot areas too.

"In the last hundred days alone at the various smash and grab hotspots in the city our services have checked 1715 people that we have engaged with who looked suspicious, who were loitering along the road, who looked like persons of interest with regard to smash and grabs."

Smith urged the public to be extra cautious and avoid crime hotspots over the festive period.
