The encroachment has resulted in persistent water woes at several extensions in the area, with some completely dry.

JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Water has discovered 280 homes encroaching on their pipeline in Protea Glen, Soweto.  

This has resulted in persistent water woes at several extensions in the area, with some completely dry.

At a media briefing on Monday, the utility highlighted that encroachment poses a flood risk should the pipeline burst.  

“We eventually found that there was a valve that had dropped, and that valve is inside the property,” said Johannesburg Water CEO, Ntshavheni Mukwevho

“What we've established as well is that when the developments were done, there’s been encroachment over our bulk line. Basically, there are about 280 houses that have been built on top of our line.”
