JOHANNESBURG - Six suspects have been arrested and four sustained injuries during a cash-in-transit robbery in the Eastern Cape.
The suspects allegedly used explosives to stop the vehicle transporting money on the M17 - near Kwazakhele.
Avele Fumba of the Hawks says members of the public alerted police of the incident and responded to the scene.
"During the suspects' escape, a high-speed chase and exchange of gunfire ensued."
It is alleged the suspects abandoned their vehicle and hijacked another with a two-year-old passenger.
"Due to a swift response of the police, the child and female victim were rescued unharmed within 200 metres and six suspects were apprehended," said Fumba.
Police say several firearms, including high-calibre rifles and pistols, were recovered alongside the ammunition.
