JOHANNESBURG - Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Secretary General Marshall Dlamini has suggested Floyd Shivambu’s departure was a pre-emptive strike born out of fears that he would not be re-elected as deputy president of the party at its elective conference this week.

Dlamini suggested Shivambu’s name wasn’t finding expression in the branches of the organisation.

Around 2,500 EFF members will participate in its third National People’s Assembly.

Speaking on Eyewitness News Politricking with Tshidi Madia, Dlamini also slammed Shivambu for failing to deliver on numerous tasks assigned to him by the organisation.

According to Dlamini, when it came to Shivambu’s prospects ahead of this week’s conference, the writing was on the wall.

“Once they start hearing the branches speaking and don’t hear their names there, they start creating this environment, and that’s why some of them jump because they knew they weren’t going to make it to Nasrec.”

He said the organisation’s leadership had been keeping an eye on their former deputy president’s conduct and performance, which it found sub-par.

Dlamini also added that Shivambu had to be removed from election structures and have several other responsibilities taken off his hands.

“Then we say leave national, leave province, leave region, go and just run a municipality of ten wards, and you fail to do that, then the organisation says you know what, just go stay at home, go enjoy your salary at home.”

The EFF’s third National People’s Assembly kicks off on Thursday.
