JOHANNESBURG - The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) says it remains illegal to set off fireworks in South Africa without a permit.
The animal welfare organisation says New Year's revellers need to be aware of the laws and regulations before finding themselves on the wrong side of the law.

The SPCA's spokesperson, Samanta Stelli, says we have to protect our furry friends these holidays.
“In terms of the law, there is the Explosive Act no. 26 of 1956 that applies nationwide and there are no exceptions to that law. And what that law says is that it’s unlawful to discharge fireworks in any building or any public place or resort without prior written permission of the local authorities.”
