CAPE TOWN - The body of a 16-year-old teenager who went missing at Ndlambe Beach in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape, has been found.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said the boy disappeared in the surf zone while swimming with friends at the beach on Thursday.
Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said a search by NSRI, alongside lifeguards, police and other emergency services led to the teen’s recovery on Friday.
"While formal identification by family is in progress, the body located and recovered is believed to be the missing teenager, age 16, from Soweto, Gauteng. Family are in the care of police, Forensic Pathology Services, Ndlambe Municipal authorities, Chaplain Services and the rowing sports community. Condolences are conveyed to family and friends of the deceased teenager."
Lambinon added that the rip current has been the cause of recent fatal drownings over the past few weeks.
