JOHANNESBURG - The State wants the lawyer of South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan to be booted from his corruption case due to a potential conflict of interest.

Jordaan and his co-accused, SAFA chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo, are both represented by advocate Norman Arendse.

Jordaan, Hluyo, and businessman Trevor Neethling made their second appearance on Thursday at the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting in Palm Ridge.

The trio is charged with several counts of fraud and theft for allegedly defrauding the football association of R1.3 million.

The State said Arendse cannot represent Jordaan and Hluyo due to the fact he has worked for SAFA.

The association is the complainant in this matter.

Arendse recently represented SAFA in court when the association was being sued by former Orlando Pirates player Tendai Ndoro.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)’s Gauteng spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, said the State will bring an application for Arendse to recuse himself.

“Where we are alleging the lawyer representing Mr Jordaan is conflicted, we will be bringing forth such evidence before court and the court will then take a decision.”

The matter returns to court next Tuesday.
