JOHANNESBURG - Corruption-accused former Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula wants her bail conditions relaxed to travel outside the country.

Mapisa-Nqakula is charged with 12 counts of corruption and one of money laundering.

The allegations date back to her time as Defence Minister when she allegedly solicited and received bribes amounting to four point five million rand from a defence contractor.

Mapisa-Nqakula appeared in the Pretoria High Court on Thursday.

As part of her bail conditions, Mapisa-Nqakula had to surrender her passport.

Due to her matter still pending, Mapisa-Nqakula is also not allowed to leave the country without permission from the State.

On Thursday, Mapisa-Nqakula’s legal representatives told the court that she intends to travel to Botswana soon.

The prosecutor, Bheki Manyathi, says the State is not opposed to this but she must make a formal application, which will include the dates and details of her entire trip.

“The one that was surrendered was a diplomatic passport, she no longer has that diplomatic status so she is going to need to apply for a normal passport through Home Affairs. What we need as the State is an affidavit because it has legal consequences.”

The matter returns to court on 20 January 2024.
