NORTH WEST -The opening round of the 2024 Nedbank Golf Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City delivered a blend of international excellence and local promise as defending champion Max Homa took the lead with an impressive 6-under-par 66.
The American, a six-time PGA tour winner, reminded the crowd why he is the player to beat, showcasing remarkable precision across the challenging course.
However, it was South Africa’s own Tristan Strydom who turned heads with a stellar performance, ending the day just one shot behind Homa at 5-under-par. Strydom’s sharp play, particularly on the par-5s, underlined his growing stature on the global stage and has positioned him as the nation’s best hope for a homegrown winner at this year’s event.
“I felt really comfortable out there today,” Strydom said after his round.
“This is a special tournament for South African golfers, and it’s an honour to be in contention early on. The support from the crowd is unbelievable, and I’m determined to make the most of this opportunity.”
The 66-player field faced tricky conditions, with swirling winds adding to the challenge of a course renowned for its difficulty. Sunshine tour stars Christian Bezuidenhout and Robin Williams also made solid starts, each finishing at 2-under-par and within the top 10, keeping South African hopes alive in the early stages.
With temperatures set to soar to 38 degrees in round two, the field will face a stern test of endurance and skill. Homa’s clinical consistency will be difficult to match, but Strydom’s form, coupled with the support of the home crowd, makes for an exciting chase at "Africa’s major".
As the tournament progresses, the question remains: can Tristan Strydom rise to the occasion and bring the title back to South Africa for the first time since Branden Grace’s victory in 2017?
One thing is certain, he has put himself in a prime position to challenge for glory.
Round two tees off at 09:21 this morning, with fans eager to see if the local favourite can keep pace with the American powerhouse at the top of the leaderboard.
