JOHANNESBURG - The CEO of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Busisiwe Memela-Khambula, has been placed on precautionary suspension.
Social Development Minister Nokuzola Tolashe said this move was necessary for the department to conduct an investigation into Memela-Khambula's appointment without undue influence.
Her suspension follows issues raised by the Office of the Public Protector about three years ago.
SASSA spokesperson, Paseka Letsatsi, said that previous ministers serving in the portfolio failed to act on inquiries by the Public Protector's office.
"The minister then arrived at the conclusion that the proper investigation has to be made in relation to the processes of her appointment. There are certain things which are asked by the Public Protector which, if you look at them, there's something procedural which was not followed or complied with."
Letsatsi said the move was taken in the best interests of millions of beneficiaries who depend on SASSA for social assistance.
The regional executive manager in Gauteng, Themba Matlou, has been appointed to act in the position pending the outcome of the investigation.
