CAPE TOWN - President Cyril Ramaphosa has invited incoming US President Donald Trump for a State visit next year during South Africa’s hosting of the G20.

Trump will be one of 40 heads of State expected to travel here next year during a packed agenda of meetings of the global bloc of developed and emerging nations.

Despite Trump’s often disparaging stance towards Africa, Ramaphosa says South Africa is unapologetic about the developmental agenda it will follow during its G20 Presidency.

During his previous Presidency, Trump never visited Africa.

His America-first approach, has many African countries worried his second Presidency will see him slash aid and preferential trade benefits for the continent.

Ramaphosa says in congratulating him on his election win, he also invited Trump on a State visit.

"Work will ensue in seeing how best that can be achieved, but we do expect him to attend as the United States is the next President of the G20."

Ramaphosa says South Africa will be expected to work closely with the US as part of the troika of the past, present and future hosts of the G20.

"All the wonderful decisions will rub off on those that will follow. So, I see very little room for any major break with what the G20 would have concluded."

Ramaphosa says he’s also ready to point the golf-loving US President towards some of South Africa’s best courses – where they can also talk business in between shots.
