CAPE TOWN - Two quick-thinking firefighters helped deliver a bouncing baby boy at the Mfuleni fire station.

Joswin Lameyer and Khuselo Blaai were at the station over the weekend, when the mom-to-be arrived, in pain.

The firemen-turned-midwives jumped into action while receiving telephonic instructions from an ambulance emergency assistant.

Within minutes, the little boy made his first appearance into the world and Lameyer and Blaai were able to clamp and cut the umbilical cord.

Both mom and baby were transported to the Site C Community Health Centre in Khayelitsha.

City Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, commended the efforts of all involved.

"The birth of a baby at our Mfuleni fire station on the first official day of the festive season is such a wonderful start to the festive season. I want to thank the two firefighters for keeping calm and thinking on their feet. And a special thanks to the ambulance assistant who guided the two men telephonically. This is not the first time in the city the safety and security directorate staff city staff have done midwife duties.”

Smith has wished the new mom and her baby well.
