CAPE TOWN - A 41-year-old policeman accused of raping an inmate at the Mfuleni Police Station appeared at the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on Monday.
His case has been postponed to next week Monday for bail information.
The officer is accused of raping a 26-year-old woman who was in custody for kidnapping and two attempted murders.
He was a cell guard on duty at the police station when the alleged incident took place.
Dressed in a white t-shirt and blue jeans the suspect stood in the dock with his hand covering his face.
According to the State, the accused booked the complainant out of the holding cell and took her to an office at the police station, under the false pretence of assisting her with her case.
He then took her to an empty cell where he allegedly pushed her down and sexually assaulted her.
The State says the accused has a pending domestic violence matter against him.
It adds that it will oppose bail should the accused apply.
