DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed that drugs found hidden at a warehouse in the Bluff area, south of Durban, are from Brazil.
The drugs were hidden in 11 cargo containers used to import beans into the country.
Police say they received a tip-off about the ship and that it was carrying drugs.
“The ship did not sail directly from Brazil to South Africa, it sailed at the beginning of November, and it went to another foreign country and then it came to South Africa. It's been on the anchor for almost a week outside Umhlanga waiting to come into the port," said KZN Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
He says police had been monitoring the ship for a while.
“Because the team had information, the ship had been on guard 24/7 until it arrived inside the port - the cargo was already flagged. It is about 10 containers were flagged and the team put a stop on so that when it arrives at the harbour it gets to move to the police section.”
