CAPE TOWN - Beachgoers are urged to be extra cautious near bodies of water this festive season.

The National Sea and Rescue Institute (NSRI)’s warning followed a rise in drowning fatalities over the past few weeks.

The NSRI is raising public awareness about the dangers of high tides in coastal areas, advising beachgoers to never turn their back on the water while stationary.

The institute has also identified rip currents as a major cause of fatal drownings, with more than seven people having drowned in the past two weeks at beaches across the country.

To prevent fatalities, the NSRI is urging parents to be vigilant about the whereabouts of their children while at the beach.

It also recommends that beachgoers swim only at beaches where lifeguards are present for added safety.
