CAPE TOWN - A man accused of raping and killing an eight-year-old boy in Peerless Park, Kraaifontein, made his first appearance at the Western Cape High Court on Friday for a pre-trial conference.
The matter has been postponed to February 2025 for his legal aid lawyer to consult with the accused and to familiarise himself with the docket.
The 48-year-old man is accused of raping and strangling to death his son's friend while at a sleepover at his home on 15 June 2023.
It's believed that his son was sleeping on another bed inside the same bedroom.
The family of the victim looked on from the public gallery as the 48-year-old accused stood in the docket expressionless.
The victim's aunt told Eyewitness News outside court that her family would like to know why the accused did what he's linked to.
"How can you strangle a little boy that is defenceless against you? What must be going on in your mind? Are you possessed? Is there so much evil? We still don't know why."
She said they hope to get those answers soon.
"We can see the judge doesn't stand for too many postponements and after talking to the prosecutor, it seems like stuff is speeding up. There's definitely hope for that this case is not going to drag for two or three years from now."
The pre-trial conference will continue on 28 February 2025.
