CAPE TOWN - The African National Congress (ANC) in Parliament says it is high time President Cyril Ramaphosa gets a salary hike.
The party said he has not had an increase since he first became president in 2018 when the National Treasury budgeted R3.6 million for his salary.
The ANC plans to table a motion in the National Assembly on Tuesday to debate the matter, but it is still unclear how much of a salary hike will be proposed.
When Ramaphosa entered the Union Buildings, he pledged to donate half his government salary to charities.
The National Treasury budgeted R4.2 million for his salary in this financial year.
However, in May, the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers only recommended a 2.5% increase for all office bearers, including the president.
It recommended he only be paid R3.3 million.
ANC Deputy Chief Whip Doris Dlakude said the president has been without a pay raise for too long.
“Since 2018, there has never been an increase in the salary of the president.”
The ANC’s Programme Whip, Cameron Dugmore, said a motion will be tabled on Tuesday to debate an increase for him.
“Members will obviously have the opportunity to make declarations and to oppose the motion or to support it in whichever way.”
On Tuesday, the House is also expected to approve a recommendation from the justice committee for a 2.5% salary increase for judges.
In June, the president signed off on a below-inflation increase of 2.5% for his deputy, ministers, premiers, parliamentarians, and local government.
