Gauteng records increase in reported rape and sexual assault, Q2 stats reveal
Gauteng’s second-quarter crime statiatics, which cover the period between July and September, indicate that while the province has recorded decreases in most crime categories, there were increases in sexual offences.

JOHANNESBURG - As the country observes 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the latest crime statistics show Gauteng has recorded an increase in reported rape and sexual assault.
On Friday, the Gauteng South African Police Service (SAPS) presented the province’s second-quarter crime stats, covering the period between July and September.

While the province has recorded decreases in most crime categories, there were increases in sexual offences.
A total of 2,171 rape cases were reported to police in the period under review, the highest of any province in the country.
Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said this is concerning.
“I want to assure you as the public that for us as a police or law enforcement agency, the combating of crimes against women and children remains a priority for 365 days.”
