JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) is calling for a review of the parole system for sexual offenders.
On Friday, members of the league marched to the Union buildings as part of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.
Joined by several political and gender-based activists, they handed a memorandum to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
During National Women’s Day in 2023, the president announced that no bail would be granted for people charged with rape.
This was effective from August.

The women’s league also wants as a minimum, a life sentence for rapists.
The Women’s League started their march at a shelter for women and children in Burgers Park that's been closed.
Over the past decade, budget cuts for the Gauteng Social Development Department have seen the reduction of funds allocated to NPOs including shelters, from 2,500 to 1,600.
The ANCWL is calling for funding to be increased.
