CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is awaiting a full report on a recent case of alleged racism and intimidation at the De Kuilen High School.

A group of girls from the school reported being threatened by a fellow pupil, with sexual assault and racist remarks.

The department spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, said once the complaints were lodged, the pupils and parents were invited to a special meeting with the police's Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Init.

She said some parents decided not to participate in the disciplinary process and withdrew their children's statements.

"The original two learners who had made the complaint did not testify, nor did they attend the meeting with SAPS [South African Police Service]."

She said despite this, the disciplinary hearing continued.

"The SGB [School Governing Body] has found the learner guilty on some of the allegations and sanctions will be determined by the SGB."

Hammond told Eyewitness News she's unable to share which of the allegations the pupil was found guilty of.

The pupil has meanwhile gone back to school but only to write exams.

She said the pupil has been writing his exams in a room separate from others.
