WATCH: Richtersveld – a region marked by striking signs of climate change
'[I] essentially was able to see how much the place is turning to dune, completely not the normal state for that space,' says Leonie Joubert, a science journalist.

Story Ark is a year-long journalistic project in which science writer Leonie Joubert travels across South Africa, uncovering the untold stories of how the climate crisis impacts remote and often ‘invisible’ places.
In this particular story, Joubert journeys to the Richtersveld in the Northern Cape, a region marked by striking signs of climate change that affect the entire landscape – and, by extension, all of us.
With 20 years of experience documenting the effects of climate change, Joubert describes the Richtersveld as a once-iconic landscape, home to some of the world’s most precious succulents, that continues to deteriorate under the pressure of a changing climate.
She expresses her heartbreak over the degradation of this vital environment, especially since many of the region's residents depend on the land for their livelihoods.
"[I] essentially was able to see how much the place is turning to dune, completely not the normal state for that space."

One of the most significant takeaways for Joubert has been the realisation that democracy is not a 'spectator sport'.
She’s witnessed firsthand the powerful impact of individuals in the Richtersveld, who, by recognising where they have influence, are stepping in to make a difference.
After leaving behind her 25-year urban life, Joubert says that she's found great solace in immersing herself in nature, finding healing and comfort in the process of telling these important stories.
As a journalist, she says that the most compelling writing often comes from stepping far outside her comfort zone – an experience she encountered while sharing the story of the Richtersveld.
"I feel deeply moved by the privilege of being able to do this."
