RANDFONTEIN - Some Randfontein residents have shared harrowing accounts of their desperate struggle to survive a fierce storm that ravaged their community.
A level two thunderstorm struck Randfontein on Wednesday, injuring 24 people and causing significant damage to homes and vehicles.
Hundreds of people were displaced, and some are now battling for their lives in hospital.
Thirty-five-year-old Nasiphi Mabhixwana and her children were asleep when a loud, jarring noise suddenly woke them in terror.
At first, she believed an earthquake had struck their area, as windows shattered and the kitchen ceiling collapsed.
While her two children screamed in fear, Nasiphi scrambled to protect them, desperate to ensure their safety and survival.
"I really thought my house was collapsing. I was scared for my life and my children's lives. Now, there is no electricity, and our food is spoiling."
While her family has now been relocated, she’s been sitting on her doorstep, seemingly lost in thought about the storm that ravaged her home.
Adjacent to the mall lies what used to be home to hundreds of people. This is Greenfields Estate which has also been damaged by the storms.
