JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Education in the Eastern Cape has appointed an acting CFO to carry out duties after death threats were received by their permanent member of staff.

According to a statement released by the department, extortionists have demanded that Nokuthula Ngcingwana resign from her position or face death if she refuses.

The province's Education MEC, Fundile Gade, attributed the demands to extortionists and called on members of the public and employees to report any work-related extortions.

Gade also confirmed the case was being investigated by law enforcement.

"The Eastern Cape Education MEC Funde Gade views these threats very seriously as such a case has been opened with law enforcement agencies to further investigate the matter" said Department of Education spokesperson, Mali Tima.
