JOHANNESBURG - The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said that people who don’t live in Thabazimbi tried to unlawfully register to vote in the city’s upcoming by-elections.

The Thabazimbi Municipality council was dissolved in August 2024, prompting fresh elections for all its ward and PR seats.

Before its dissolution, the Limpopo-based municipality had two sets of mayors and officials appointed by two different coalitions claiming to govern the city.

On Thursday, the IEC held a media briefing in Thabazimbi to update the public on its state of readiness for next Wednesday’s by-elections.

IEC provincial electoral officer, Nkaro Mateta, said that only people who lived in Thabazimbi had been registered to vote in the by-elections.

"There were two or three such cases where some people were trying to register here when their place of residence is in Lephalale Municipality and to some extent in the Bela Bela Municipality. So, we dealt with them, they were removed from the voters’ roll."
