CAPE TOWN - It is matter of hours before the Black Friday shopping frenzy hits.

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States when shops increase their operating times and offer goods and services at discounted prices.
It's grown in popularity, with South Africans enjoying the now global shopping phenomenon, for about a decade.

Some retail giants, like Massmart, have deals on offer throughout November.

The group's Vice President of Marketing, Andrew Stein: "At Massmart, we are seeing that South Africans are interested in Black Friday, they have been for many years....and a chance to find genuine value....people are more conscious about getting the most out of their budget..."

Stein said Game, Makro, Jumbo Cash and Carry and Builders Warehouse have focused on rolling out real value and keeping deals available for a longer period this year.

"Our research revealed that 75% of Game customers planned to spend more on Black Friday this year than last and to accommodate this increased demand, we are offering deals throughout the entire month at Game, Makro and Builders, giving our customers more time to find the right deal and enjoy a less rushed shopping experience."

Stein said in the first two weeks of their Black Friday specials, South Africans responded well to the discounts on offer.

"At Game, customers are interested in nappies, UHD TVs, washing machines - specifically the 14kg, air fryers and entry-level laptops... However, there has also been a lot of interest in pantry essentials this year, as there was last year."

Stein said at Makro, shoppers are taking advantage of deals on fridge-freezer combos, washing machines and even home fitness equipment and gaming consoles.
