CAPE TOWN - Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said that government was making headway in averting a gas crisis in South Africa.
Ramokgopa said the country could face a gas shortage in 2027, putting five percent of the gross domestic product at risk.
The minister said that the looming crisis was due to the country's source of gas reserves in Mozambique being depleted.
Ramokgopa said that the South African government was in bilateral talks with Qatar to avoid the crisis.
"We are getting to the stage of contracting. At the right time, we will share with the country but the message that I want to provide is that we are going to avoid that gas cliff. I must say that we are making tremendous progress."
