CAPE TOWN - On day 245 without load shedding, Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said that Eskom was making steady progress to meet the country's electricity demands.

Ramokgopa provided an update on the performance of Eskom's energy grid for the country's electricity supply at a media briefing on Wednesday.

Eskom's weekly energy availability is currently averaging at 64%, according to Ramokgopa.

The minister said that the energy availability factor (EAF) was steadily increasing.

"Remember that the project is to ensure that by March of 2025, the EAF should be about 70%, and I'm confident that we are on route to getting there," the minister said.

Ramokgopa said the energy utility had also been able to save a significant amount of money.

"We saved about R16 billion of diesel consumption a year to date compared to the same period last year."

The minister said the figure showed that Eskom was becoming an efficient generator of electricity.
