JOHANNESBURG - The Road Accident Fund (RAF) is set to reject a billion rands worth of fraudulent claims in a bid to clamp down on corruption.
The entity has already blocked claims worth R65 million over the past three financial years.
A total of 2,031 claims were rejected – 870 in 2023/2024, 713 in 2022/23 and 448 in 2021/22.
The RAF's McIntosh Polela said that 28 people had been convicted.
Polela said that the RAF was particularly pleased with the conviction of Siyabulela Kima, who thought that he could get over R8.3 million at the expense of the taxpayers.
"This sends a strong message that the courts and indeed the RAF will not stand by and watch as the people try to swindle the state institution. And we are hoping that this message is going to be loud and clear to others that they are going to end up in jail."
