JOHANNESBURG - The Polokwane Municipality intends on applying to become a grade six municipality, which will come with hefty salary increases for councillors.

A report recently tabled to the municipality’s portfolio committee on admin and governance said that the municipality meets all the requirements to have its classification upgraded.

In October, the Department of Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) published the updated grading conditions for municipalities.

To qualify for grade six status, a municipality has to collect an annual income of over R2.3 billion and have a population size of over 681,000.

In a report recently tabled to the Polokwane Municipality’s portfolio committee on admin and governance, it said the municipality exceeded both conditions.

The report recommended that the municipality apply to the Limpopo COGTA MEC for a grade six classification.

This is the highest grade for municipalities and also comes with significant salary increases for the mayor, committee chairpersons and councillors.
