KZN disaster management teams on high alert following level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms
The South African Weather Service issued the alert on Wednesday warning of damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail and heavy downpours over the southern parts of the province.
JOHANNESBURG - In KwaZulu-Natal, disaster management teams are on high alert to respond to any weather-related incidents following a level 4 weather warning for severe thunderstorms in the province on Wednesday.
The South African Weather Service issued the alert on Wednesday, warning of damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail and heavy downpours over the southern parts of the province.
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila, said that residents and motorists were advised to exercise extreme caution.
"Flooding of roads, settlements, and low-lying areas, leading to potential road and bridge closures; strong winds possibly causing trees to block major roads; excessive lightning, which could pose a danger to life for both humans and livestock."
Areas likely to be affected on Wednesday include: Oabaqulusi, Big Five Hlabisa Hlabisa, Big Five Hlabisa Hluhluwe, Edumbe, Jozini, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, Nkandla, Nongoma, Nquthu, Ulundi, Umhlabuyalingana, Umhlathuze, Umlalazi, Umvoti, Uphongolo, Ray Nkonyeni.
"MEC Buthelezi has urged all communities to adhere to these warnings and take proactive measures to protect lives and property. It is recommended that livestock be moved to safer areas. Disaster management teams will continue to monitor areas that are prone to weather-related incidents."
