JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng government has paid out R15 million to the province’s former members of the legislature (MPLs) who lost their seats.

This is contained in the mid-term adjustment budget, which was presented to the Gauteng Legislature on Tuesday.

MPLs who did not return are entitled to gratuity payments, which are determined based on their profiles.

Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile said the money is to help cushion them as they deal with a loss of income.

“There are laws that say when you are an MP [member of Parliament] or MPL, when you leave, you, like all other people that are employed, are entitled to a pension, you are entitled to gratuity. We don’t decide that - we must make money available to finance the policies that have been determined.”
