JOHANNESBURG - In Limpopo, there are moves to introduce tighter alcohol trading restrictions to reduce crime and fatalities this holiday season.

Police there want liquor outlets to stop trading at midnight instead of 2am.

The Research Unit on the Economics of Excisable Products' Samantha Filby discussed the possibility of the Western Cape adopting this intervention.

"Over 70% of homicide cases that occur over a weekend, their people tested positive for alcohol. Alcohol is linked to these violent crimes, deaths, accidental deaths and curbing alcohol trading hours can really put a dent in that."
