JOHANNESBURG - Eskom is still helping residents in Soweto get their meters updated after their deadline came and went on Sunday.

The utility is now assisting customers who are illegally connected to the grid.

Since the early hours of Monday morning, residents have been queuing at the Eskom service centre in Zola for assistance.

The power utility has warned that meters not upgraded this week will stop working.

Last week, there was almost a stampede when hundreds of people showed up at the Zola Eskom service centre to upgrade their prepaid meters.

The Department of Electricity decided that people connected to the grid illegally are buying tokens from unregistered vendors, and have issues with their meters and must on Monday.

Among the hundreds who returned on Monday is Phumzile Dubazane, who has bypassed her electricity meter.

“I moved into my late sister’s house, and it was her children who bypassed the electricity meter because they didn’t have money.”

Residents say they were told by Eskom officials they have to pay a R6,000 fine for connecting to the grid illegally.
