Despite decrease, SA's murder stats still alarmingly high

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's murder statistics remain alarmingly high, despite recording a decrease.
Between July and September, 6,545 people were murdered across the country.
This is 400 fewer murders than what was recorded same time last year.

While murder and rape figures have decreased, attempted murder and assault GBH saw an increase of 150 and 424 cases, respectively.
SAPS' crime registrar, General Norman Sekhukhune, elaborated on the latest stats.
"We have recorded a decrease in terms of the murders, 400 compared to the previous comparable period. Sexual offences reduced by 325. We, however, recorded an increase in terms of the attempted murders of 150, assault with the intention to commit grievous bodily harm, an increase of 424."
Carjacking decreased by almost 10% from 6,009 cases in the previous period to 5,447 cases between July and September.
