CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town says it will assist residents who missed the deadline to update their prepaid electricity meters until May 2025.
The municipality explained that Eskom has granted permission for local governments to issue new codes to non-compliant customers.

Eskom has, however, warned that users may need to pay a R12,000 penalty fee to update their meter software.
The City of Cape Town said it has been communicating with its electricity customers over the past three years, urging them to update their meter software.
Energy MMC Xanthea Limberg has reassured users that there’s still hope for those who failed to update their meters before Sunday’s deadline.
“The arrangement that has also been made by the sector or by the industry is that municipalities, as well as Eskom, will be permitted to issue codes up until May 2025.”
Western Cape provincial Eskom stakeholder manager Zama Mpondwana said the meter software updates will come at a cost.
“The electricity that you have will be depleted, and then you will find a situation where you are unable to load your token because your meter will still be in Key Revision 1.”
Customers of the city and Eskom who have not updated their meters will no longer be able to load electricity vouchers until their meter software is updated.
