South Africans who use prepaid electricity have until Sunday midnight to upgrade their meter boxes.
Many customers continue to scramble at Eskom and municipality offices to ensure their systems are upgraded.
Residents across South Africa have been advised to buy tokens from legal vendors, which will automatically assist with upgrading their current meters.
City Power Spokesperson Isaac Mangena:
"Over 99% of our vending prepaid meters have been duly upgraded, with just a handful of that category of customers still pending upgrades. Out of those outstanding customers, 441 are in Alexandra where our technicians have been facing some reluctance. However, with the deadline drawing near along with the suspension of penalty fees, we have seen an uptick in the number of customers voluntarily coming forward."
Meanwhile, City Power is appealing to Johannesburg residents living in complexes to ensure their electricity meter boxes are upgraded.

The city has stressed that this upgrade is not the responsibility of the body corporate.
City Power is appealing to sectional title holders to also ensure that they each upgrade meters in their respective units adding that the responsibility lies with owners.
“We appeal to the sectional title holders to also ensure that they each upgrade meters in their respective units … it’s come to our attention that some customers who reside in customers that their body corporate will be responsible for the individual unity meter upgrading meters, that responsibility, unfortunately, lies with the owners.”
