CAPE TOWN - The South African Informal Traders Alliance has proposed a period of 12 months for the registration of spaza shops.

This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Friday last week that spaza shop owners have 21 days only to register their businesses.

In recent months, more than 20 children have died due to foodborne illnesses from goods said to have been bought from local spaza shops.

The Informal Traders Alliance said that South Africa is home to over six million spaza shops and 21 days is not enough to register all the shops in the country.

National Informal Traders Alliance of South Africa, President, Rosheda Muller said, "We have never had such severe incidents of food poisoning. How we tragically lost 23 children. So now the government has realised they have not done enough and that they are now wanting to implement the licencing and re-registration of each and every spaza operating."
