A group of Edgemead, Monte Vista, and Bothasig Neighbourhood Watch members are staging a peaceful demonstration at the corner of Edgemead Drive against gender based violence on 23 November 2024.

CAPE TOWN - Over 100 members of Neighbourhood Watch Groups from Edgemead, Bothasig, Monte Vista, and Plattekloof staged a peaceful demonstration against gender-based violence (GBV) at the corner of Edgemead Drive in Cape Town on Saturday.

The protest comes as the country prepares to observe 16 days of activism for No Violence Against Women and Children on Monday.

The campaign is observed annually from 25 November to 10 December.

The different Neighbourhood Watch Groups said that the purpose of the demonstration was to highlight the persistent scourge of GBV.

They said standing against the abuse of women and children involves everyone in society.

Convenor of the demonstration, Michelle Stanford said "It's a national problem and each one of us has a role to play, either as an advocate, a support, or an ally. Our law enforcement needs our support, men need our support, women need our support."
